News Release:
Governor Signing SHB 1084The Alliance to Restore Native American Names to holy and sacred sites has just struck a chord in their effort to do just that. May 16th SHB 1084 was signed by Washington State Governor Chris Gregiore. The bill re establishes the WA State Board of Geographic Names of Places, which was abolished in 2010 due to budget constraints. With the Board re established, creates an avenue to take the current effort to restore the Native name to the mountain. The bill will go into effect 90 days from the date signed, Aug 8th.
The Alliance now has a place to take the effort to restore the Aboriginal Indigenous name to the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states, erroneously named after a British Naval Officer whom never set eyes on the majestic mountain, to Ti'Swaq'. www.RestoreNativeNames.org

Robert Satiacum, Publisher and Editor of PuyallupTribalNews.com

Robert Satiacum is an enrolled member of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians. He is the son of the late Chief Bob Satiacum - widely known for his sacrifices made for sovereignty and fishing rights. Satiacum is immersed his native culture, and diligently practices the traditions of the Sweat Lodge, Native American Church, and the annual Tribal Journeys in his family canoe. Satiacum credits these traditions for providing him the balance and stability to “be the best Rob he can be”. Robert is a public speaker and is called upon to offer traditional blessing and prayers at many community events. Also an actor, Satiacum was cast in the role as a tribal cop in the movie “Rain in the Mountains In 2005”.

Currently, Satiacum is leading an effort to establish the Restore Native Names Alliance - a confederation of groups and individuals committed to restoring Native American names to sacred sites. The kick-off event for the Alliance was May 30th, 2010 at the Day of 1000 Drums gathering in Tacoma to restore the Native American name to Mt. Rainier. Cedar Media has posted a web site to support the effort at: RestoreNativeNames.org. Robert Satiacum Hosts "Tribal Talk" on KLAY 1180 AM Thursdays Noon-1pm: Visit: TribalTalkRadio.org

In 2003, he and Digital Media Producer Mark Celletti formed Cedar Media - a company dedicated to giving a voice to Native Americans. They built the independent news web site: PuyallupTribalNews.com, which has made a positive impact on tribal politics. They also produced NativeElders.org (video interviews with native elders), NativeArtists.org, and recently: CanoeWay.org
